ON an evening in February 2002, the four original members of The Angels found themselves on stage together again through a coincidence.
John Brewster, Chris Bailey, Graham `Buzz' Bidstrup and Rick Brewster were there to play a charity concert for victims of the Bali bombing but ended up performing on stage together after a 20-year gap.
``We had so much fun, felt so useful and we were overwhelmed by the audience response,'' Rob Brewster said.
``It was incredibly uplifting and uniting.'' Now performing as The Original Angels Band, the quartet have re- established themselves as one of Australia's top rock bands performing the songs that made them a household name.
Fans can expect to hear all the classics at the Mayfield Hotel on Saturday night.
Tracks such as Take a Long Line, Shadowboxer, After the Rain, Mr Damage and Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again all regularly feature in the band's live sets.
While former frontman Doc Neeson has formed his own band Red Phoenix, The Original Angels Band has carried on with John Brewster handling vocal duties.
Late last year the band was invited to perform at The Basement in Sydney.
It was recorded live and will soon be released as a 16-track album, Live at The Basement. ``We played the classic Angels hits that we liked true to the old feel,'' Brewster said.
``Some treated with acoustic guitar, a few new and obscure numbers and some just the way you remember them. We just let the songs do the talking. ``The vibe in the room was rapturous. People cried. We got a bit loose in parts but the songs and the passion stood the test of time.'' The Original Angels Band attracted a sell-out crowd during a recent show at Edgeworth. Punters are advised to get their tickets early to avoid disappointment.
Tickets are on sale now at the Mayfield Hotel.
