PERTH'S Gyroscope was looking for less distractions when it came time to record the follow-up to its breakthrough debut album, Sound Shattering Sound. So it seemed a little strange when it announced it was going to record the album in a city renowned as one of the world's craziest: Los Angeles. But that's just what they did and The four-piece packed its bags and headed to California to team with producer Mark Trombino, best known for his work with Jimmy Eat World, The Living End and Blink 182. ``Living and working on this album in LA has been a life-changing experience to say the least,'' guitarist and vocalist Zoran Trivic said.

``I guess being out of our comfort zone means that we have less distractions and more energy to focus on recording.

``Although that said, being in LA is a distraction in itself!'' While in the US, Gyroscope took the opportunity to film a video for the album's first single, Fast Girl, in the heart of Death Valley, Nevada.

With the video and sessions for the second sophomore album complete, Gyroscope is on the road this month to warm up with a few live dates before unleashing the new album. The Fast Girl Tour will land in Newcastle at the Cambridge Hotel on Friday night and give fans the chance to hear tracks from the forthcoming album Are You Involved?, set for release on September 25.

``We're really excited about the new album,'' bassist Brad Campbell said.

``It's been a while since we've toured and we've got plenty of energy to burn.'' Gyroscope will be supported by The Hot Lies. The Adelaide punk rockers have returned to the nation's airwaves this month with the new radio single Promise Me. The track is taken from the band's forthcoming EP Heart Attacks and Callous Acts, set for release on September 19.

When the tour wraps up at Wollongong on Sunday, The Hot Lies will then prepare to embark on a national tour supporting Swedish rockers Millencolin.
