THE number one spot on the UK pop charts at Christmas is seen as the most coveted position every year.

So when little-known US singer- songwriter GARY JULES stole the slot from Brit rockers THE DARKNESS in December 2003, he knew he had something special.

Jules's cover of TEARS FOR FEARS' Mad World was recorded for the film Donnie Darko on a budget of less than $100.

But, strangely, it didn't enter the charts until more than a year after the film's release.

Although the song was a slow burner, Jules said he is thankful it has allowed him to achieve the recognition he has craved for 20 years as a struggling musician.

"I know people come for Mad World , but a lot of people have even gone and sought out my old record,'' Jules said.

``It's nice to get recognition after working for 20 years.'' His background will always remain with him.

``I love the indie world because the equation is so simple,'' Jules said.

``You write songs you care about, record them as honestly and as cheaply as you can, then you go on the road and play them. And that's it.'' Mad World is included on Jules's new album Trading Snakeoil For Wolftickets.

Jules will support US singer- songwriter DONAVON FRANKENREITER at the CAMBRIDGE HOTEL tomorrow night.

Tickets are $27.50 from THE ROCK SHOP, BEAUMONT ST BEAT, SOUND WORLD and the Cambridge Hotel.
