JAZZ fans will be pleased to hear that a new music venue will open this week in Newcastle.

The Soapbox Cafe will offer a variety of jazz sounds providing electric and acid jazz to funk and fusion.

The contemporary jazz venue will operate once a month and boast performances from some of the finest jazz musicians in Australia.

The Soapbox Cafe will debut this week with a performance from one of the country's foremost keyboard players, Bill Risby. Risby's skills have placed him alongside Australian stars such as James Morrison, Marcia Hines, Vanessa Amorosi and Jenny Morris. On Friday night, Risby will launch his new album Falling with the help of drummer Andrew Gander, bass player Gavin Pierce and guitarist Dieter Kleemans. The concert will kick off at 8pm at the Celebration Centre, 15 Denison St, Newcastle West.
