EVERY musician has a memorable tale to tell when describing their rise to fame and bassist Craig Calhoun is no exception.
Calhoun began his early days performing throughout California and Europe.
His talents were recognised during a small show with his band at a restaurant in California.
'A couple of gentlemen walked in as we were about to finish our last song and offered us $200 to play another two songs,' Calhoun recalls.
'They offered us a production contract and we were flown to San Francisco and after five months we were assigned a producer and proceeded to record an album.'
But after a rift in the band Calhoun found himself touring with soul legends Mary Wilson and The Supremes. He lives in Australia where he continues to tour, record and write for television.
On Friday night, Calhoun and his band The Brothers of Oz will perform a soulful blend of r'n'b, Motown, reggae, jazz and blues at The Soapbox Cafe on Denison St, Newcastle.
Doors open at 7.30pm and tickets are $15.
