NEWCASTLE will get to see the other side of one of the most influential Australian guitarists of our time, Ed Kuepper, when he returns on Friday night.
Last time 'The Godfather of Australian Independent Music' graced our fair city he was in stripped-back solo mode for the CBD Hotel's Cool Room.
The sound was lush, creative and like no-one else, as you would expect from Kuepper, but sitting alone on a stage with an electric guitar and a foot-box does have its limits.
At the Cambridge Hotel this time around he will be with what he describes as 'a s###-hot band', called His Exploding Universe.
It will be the first time he has played with a line-up in more than a decade.
The original guitarist for The Saints will be joined by Alex Compton on bass, John Gucci on keys and Dave Aston on drums and percussion.
This formidable outfit should present an outstanding set drawing from Kuepper's back catalogue, which spans 30 years of recording.
Material will date to his old bands, of course The Saints and the Laughing Clowns, as well as songs from his latest release, Outtakes, Castaways, Pirate Women and Takeaways.
