Celibate Rifles are Shooting up Coast

Where: University - Bar on the Hill
Author: Michael Gadd
When: Thursday March 8, 2001

The Celibate Rifles are still firing as they tour venues up the east coast to promote their independently and most recently released album, A mid-stream of consciousness, throughout March.

The band plays tomorrow night on a huge bill at the Newcastle University's Bar on the Hill with Machine Gun Fellatio, NoKTuRNl and Favours For Each Other. Always unfashionable, the Godfathers of Australian punk stopped caring (if they ever did) about radio air time and securing a record deal years ago.

The year 2000 saw the band release their ninth studio album and hit the live scene with six gigs and two sold-out harbour cruises.

Track three from their album 'I shoulda' has been receiving radio airplay on Triple J.

Rolling Stone said of the band: 'Despite being around for 20 years, and sticking tight to their original formula - Detroit via Sydney's northern beaches garage rock - they've never stagnated.'

The album's 14 tracks range from mighty riffs (Talk-back Saviour) to wide-eyed balladeering (Child Of Mine), all hammered out in rough and ready fashion.
