SYDNEY band EPICURE has gone from strength to strength since its single, FEET UNDER ME, was added to the TRIPLE J playlist and played on MTV, TRIPLE R, 3D RADIO and 4ZZZ. The group, playing at the Northern Star Hotel on Saturday night with CHIN CHEN and FAVOURS FOR EACH OTHER, picked up a national support for THE SUPERJESUS during November and December. Singer JUAN ALBAN, guitarists MICHAEL BROWN and LUKE CAIRNES, bass player TIM BIGNELL and drummer DOMINIC SANTAMARIA, have racked up 90 gigs since February last year. This month the band releases the radio-only tracks JOHNNY VENUS/SUNSILK GIRL from their debut album, FOLD through MGM DISTRIBUTION. BANGING ON:
HEAVY original music will return to The Cambridge Hotel this Friday, February 16 for the monthly CLUB BANG night featuring DRAMA, SCAR CHILD and ANAKIN. The three bands will perform in Bar Deco from 8.30pm until 1am. Entry is $3.

SPIN magazine said 'He will pull up his jet engine, squall in your yard and blow you away like brittle leaves'. The LOS ANGELES TIMES said he 'shone like a bedazzled metal God as he alternately seduced and attacked his guitar'. Both publications were talking about J. MASCIS, formerly of DINOSAUR JR, most recently fronting his own band THE FOG with bass player MIKE WATT from FIREHOSE and MINUTEMEN and Dinosaur Jr drummer GEORGE BERZ. The band will perform at the University of Newcastle with NITOCRIS on Thursday, March 1.
SWEET POP:
SOMETHING FOR KATE has emerged from the recording studio after tracking and mixing their new as-yet-untitled follow-up album to 1999's BEAUTIFUL SHARKS. The band will perform at the University of Newcastle on Friday, March 2, for the ORIENTATION BALL. The group will embark on a singles tour later in the year, but will not return to Newcastle until July for a national album tour.

RADIO personality DAVID JONES has started hosting a new evening request show for KO-FM called DJ's ALL REQUEST NIGHTLINE. The new 'live and local' program can be heard from 8pm until midnight, Monday to Friday.BAND COMP:
THE first heat of The Castle's ULTIMATE BATTLE OF THE BANDS will begin tonight at 9pm, signalling the first of 20 heats, six semifinals and a grand final over the next eight months. More than 250 bands are expected to enter the competition, for which organisers are offering $15,000 worth of prizes including a recording, mixing and mastering deal with MARK TINSON's OVERHEAD STUDIOS, CD pressing, instruments from MUSO'S CORNER and $5000 in cash.
