IT'S one of the most popular musicals ever performed and coming to Newcastle next month.
West Side Story is being brought to Club Nova Newcastle by Opera Hunter. The show features a vibrant cast of local performers who are considered to be the most talented in the Hunter Region.
The classic production has 41 performers and a 20-piece orchestra, assuring a dazzling series of shows.
This adaptation of West Side Story is directed by Australian director Peter Ross. 'We saw over 100 people for the roles in West Side,' Ross said.
'The talent in this region is amazing, we have a superb cast from all over and I think that's fantastic.'
Ross has had vast experience in stage productions, starring in productions of Sunset Boulevard and directing plays including Guys and Dolls. West Side Story was originally performed on Broadway with a energetic young cast, and casting for this performance was made with the intention to recapture the same energy and spirit as seen in the original.
West Side Story follows a tragic Romeo and Juliet style tale in the slums of New York City.
It follows the tale between to warring street gangs, The Jets and The Sharks, and two members who bridge the gap between the gangs with their new-found love.
Their idealistic romance is set against the street-wise love of Anita and Bernardo who are also doomed by the ghetto society.
Featuring a score of well-known songs such a Maria, Something's Coming and Somewhere, West Side Story has become a production enjoyed by all ages.
