AUSTRALIA'S finest and most influential guitar band THE CHURCH will tour its latest album A BOX OF BIRDS in March and April, arriving at the Newcastle Workers Club on Saturday, April 1.
The Church, who had a US Top 20 hit in 1988 with UNDER THE MILKY WAY from their STARFISH album, first came to prominence in Australia in March, 1981.
Their first Australian Top 20 single THE UNGUARDED MOMENT, from the album OF SKINS AND HEART, was a winner with a fresh approach, jangly guitar motifs and surreal lyrics.
The next album THE BLURRED CRUSADE produced I'M ALMOST WITH YOU, which took the band on the first of its many overseas jaunts to Europe and the US.
While the band has failed to reproduce the commercial success of Starfish, the albums since 1989 have surpassed the critical acclaim of previous efforts, particularly 1992's PRIEST=AURA. In 1997 original member PETER KOPPES rejoined MARTY WILSON-PIPER and STEVE KILBEY who, along with drummer and sound engineer TIM POWLES, recorded HOLOGRAM OF BAAL which was described as a return to form.
With a new record deal, the group has produced Box Of Birds, 'a new slant on old songs' by other bands including FRICTION by TELEVISION and PORPOISE SONG by THE MONKEES TE
