Joy and Lara:

Who: Joy and Lara
Where: Northern Star Hotel
When: Thursday June 8, 2000

AS a duo JOY HOWARD and LARA GOODRIDGE were discovered in 1998 by visiting Irish band LUNASA playing at a Sydney venue. Lunasa invited the violin, acoustic guitar and harmonies duo to join them on stage, which led to the pair being spotted by scouts and invited to open for ART GARFUNKEL and LEO KOTTKE at the Sydney State Theatre and in support of BRUCE COCKBURN.

Tomorrow night JOY & LARA will release their second CD, THIN ICE, in Newcastle at the Northern Star Hotel. The duo's songwriting draws inspiration from JONI MITCHELL, PAUL SIMON, PAUL KELLY and THE INDIGO GIRLS.

NEW GROOVE: MEMBERS of LUCY'S WALL have branched into a new group called SHAFT, which makes its debut on Friday night at the Beach Hotel and Saturday night at the Nag's Head. QWAKE drummer ADAM MANNING has teamed up with lead singer DANNY YOUNG, bass player LLOYD RICHARDSON and guitarist AARON LAWRIE. The group hopes to take on the lucrative Sydney market up to three nights a week, which apparently is starved of live rock bands. As well as the ISAAC HAYES theme song to the 1970s movie after which the group is named, Shaft will perform music by HOT CHOCOLATE, STEVIE WONDER, SUPERGROOVE, INXS, TOM JONES and THE EASYBEATS.

SUB POP: SUPPORTING BIG HEAVY STUFF on Friday night at the Cambridge Hotel will be Sydney's UKIYO-E, 'an instrumental collaboration mixing jazz-tinged soundscapes and chilled electro' in the same vein as ISOTYPE 217, THE SEA and CAKE. Also on the bill will be Melbourne's BY FERRY OR STEAMER, who has recorded two tracks for the AUGOGO compilation CD MUSICAL IDENTIKIT, released in March. Both bands will launch a split seven-inch single on the night.
