THERE is no shortage of up-and- coming talent in Newcastle and this weekend eight young bands will take the stage in a new showcase event.

Handpicked is an all-ages gig created to help develop and promote under-age original music.

It will be held at Newcastle Panthers on Friday night and feature eight local school-aged bands sharing the bill with hip-hop crew Joel Turner and the Modern Day Poets. Handpicked is being staged in an effort to promote and develop underage original music, providing the opportunity for young artists to perform before a public audience at a professionally organised event. ``It is difficult for young original bands to come across these opportunities to perform. Upon the success of this first event, EAO Entertainment and Mavis Entertainment aim to build Handpicked into a bi-annual event,'' organiser Me-shell Croker said.

Handpicked will blast across two stages at Newcastle Panthers.

More than 20 bands auditioned for the event.

The eight selected to perform are Dangerfield, Imperium, Immune, Jinn, Cadence, Foreshadowed, Daylight Robbery and The Last Call. Following these bands award- winning Newcastle trio Solver will perform then the headline act Joel Turner and the Modern Day Poets.

Turner, who found fame as a contestant on Australian Idol in 2003, was recently named World Beatbox Champion at a contest in Germany.

Patrons can vote for their favourite school band on the night.

The winning group will be presented with a plaque to display at their school.

Doors open at 6pm and the event will continue until 11pm. Tickets are on sale now at Newcastle Panthers.
