JUDGING by reviews from her recent concert in Melbourne, it should be quite a show when singing superstar Cher brings her Farewell Tour to Newcastle tonight.
Costume changes, acrobatics, a mechanical elephant and the star descending from the roof in a chandelier are just some of the highlight moments which have earned the show its reputations as a dazzling extravaganza.
Australian fans will be some of the last in the world to see Cher perform in the spectacular $3 million production as it works its way around the country before winding up back in the US next month.
Now in its fourth calendar year, the Farewell Tour has been seen by almost three million fans in more than 300 shows around the world and has become one of the most successful tours by a female artist. It has taken in more than $US200 million at the box office.
Cher's lengthy career as a musician and actress will be featured throughout the show when she performs at Newcastle Entertainment Centre tonight.
She tells her story, touching on her work in recording, television, theatre and film, with video footage of those she has worked with over the years including Elton John, David Bowie, Liberace, Michael Jackson and Sonny Bono. Recent shows have included renditions of early tunes like All I Want To Do, Half Breed and Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves, If I Could Turn Back Time, The Shoop Shoop Song (It's In His Kiss) and her comeback hits Strong Enough and Believe. YMCA stars The Village People are supporting Cher on her Australian tour and will open tonight's show.
