SINCE the introduction of its regular hip- hop night Mindstate in June last year, Ruffneck Promotions has welcomed some of the country's biggest acts to the stage.
ARIA winners Koolism, The Herd, TZU and Downsyde are just a handful of the Australian hip-hop acts that have graced the stage.
Mindstate returns this week and promoters are taking it to the next level by hosting it as a monthly event.
Two acts from leading hip-hop label Obese Records will fill the bill with MC Layla launching her debut album Heretik and Melbourne duo Muph and Plutonic doing their new album Hunger Pains. Both enjoyed success before forming Muph and Plutonic.
MC Muph won the Victorian Verbal Mechanics Freestyle Battle Competition in 2001 and released his debut album, More Than Music, a couple of years later.
He has shared the stage with internationals like Sage Francis and People Under The Stairs while production wizard Plutonic has played with the likes of Ozomatli, DJ Shadow and Tricky. Once the pair teamed it wasn't too long before Hunger Pains emerged, offering an energetic insight into the Australian lifestyle.
Plutonic said their live show wasn't your typical hip-hop display.
``We've got Slap 618 on turntables doing a bit of cutting for us, Muphin is obviously handling the raps and I'm playing live drums over all our loops and what-not,'' Plutonic said.
``It's a pretty live show as far as hip- hop goes; it's not just your standard MC and DJ set-up.'' Muph and Plutonic perform at Mindstate along with Layla and local talents Nameless and D*Steady tomorrow night at The Band Room @ Newcastle Leagues Club. Doors open at 8.30pm.
Tickets cost $12 at the door.
