Songwriter On Roll With Three-piece

Who: Anne McCue
Where: Northern Star Hotel
When: Friday March 4, 2005

LUCINDA Williams is a fan, as is influential BBC Radio presenter Bob Harris, who described Anne McCue's latest album Roll as his favourite of 2004.

Novocastrians will have the chance to see what all the fuss is about when the Australian-born singer- songwriter performs at the Northern Star Hotel on Friday.

Born and raised in Sydney, McCue was one of eight children. Her influences were diverse from The Beatles to French composer Eric Satie to Nick Cave .

McCue took a shining to a guitar her brother purchased and occasionally had a strum but it wasn't until the death of her father that she realised what she wanted to do with her life.

Her first venture saw her join Australian pop/ garage group Girl Monstar, which scored an ARIA nomination for Best Independent Release, before she went solo.

She released an album and spent time touring the US where she set up home in Los Angeles and continued to perform, supporting Dave Alvin, Richard Thompson and Williams.

Her latest album Roll has again proved her skill as a songwriter and guitarist.

Produced by McCue and bassist Dusty Wakeman, she made a solid choice to keep things simple by recording as a trio with the help of Wakeman and drummer Dave Raven. The idea was to get back to a three-piece band in the studio, she says.

McCue will be supported by The Custom Kings . Tickets are $8 at the door.
