THERE is no denying the unstoppable popularity of Jack Johnson, the Hawaiian singer- songwriter whose laid- back music style has captured the hearts of listeners around the globe.
And none more so than here in Australia, where Johnson's latest album, In Between Dreams , debuted at number one on the ARIA album chart, selling a staggering 29,000 in only one week.
Even Johnson, who is back in Australia on a national tour this month, conceded the reception from Australian fans had taken him by surprise.
``Well, the big surprise was how easily everything worked out down there,'' Johnson said.
``Just the first time we came down we played the Byron Bay Blues Roots Festival and we were really surprised to see what a big crowd stuck around for our set.
``It was a lot to do with a lot of Ben Harper's fans and different musicians that have been really supportive of us, including G.Love and Special Sauce, and so a lot of their fans came out and supported us the first time we came and then we went back and played in kind of a bar and club tour,'' Johnson said.
The tour, which was Johnson's first headline run in Australia following a previous tour supporting Ben Harper, attracted sell-out crowds.
When Johnson returns to Newcastle Entertainment Centre on Wednesday, March 23, he will be supported by long-time musical partner G Love and his group Special Sauce, Australian roots artist Xavier Rudd and DJ Katalyst.
