AMERICAN indie rock outfit Spoon will perform in Newcastle as part of its upcoming Australian tour.
Spoon returns in September on the back of its new album Gimme Fiction to perform at Newcastle Leagues Club on Saturday, September 17.
Hailing from Austin, Texas, Spoon was founded it 1994 and took its name from the record label home to '70s Kraut- rockers, Can. The debut album, Telephono, was released in 1996 and two years later, Spoon signed to major label Elektra for its follow up release, A Series of Sneaks. Despite comparisons to The Pixies and Sonic Youth, Elektra was unhappy with the signing and the band was dropped by the label shortly after the album's release.
Things took a turn for the better in 2001 when Spoon signed to North Carolina label Merge and recorded the breakthrough album Girls Can Tell which sold more copies than both their previous two releases combined.
Kill the Moonlight, the band's fourth album and their debut Australian release, accomplished the same feat a year later.
On the back of that release, Spoon undertook its first Australian tour in 2003.
Returning in September, the upcoming tour will kick off in Melbourne and take in eight shows across the country before finishing in Newcastle.
Tickets go on sale tomorrow and will be available online at www.bigtix.com.au or direct from the venue, The Rock Shop, Soundworld and Beaumont St Beat.
