DRIVER Eight wasn't always intended to be a fully fledged band.
In fact, the original line-up consisted solely of singer-songwriter Paul Nickerson .
Bassist Gavin Chipperfield and guitarist Mark Paynter were called in by Nickerson to help him out at his live shows.
In the end, the union worked so well that Nickerson decided they should join him on a full-time basis.
That was in 2002, and with the addition of drummer Mark Williams , who had previously worked with the likes of Thread and Tonchi , Driver Eight is now a world away from its early beginnings.
Nickerson said Driver Eight was also used as a tool to teach his guitar students what was expected of a live act.
``I have lots of guitar students, I've been doing it for a while,'' Nickerson said.
``I get them to come down and see the band play and see what it's all about.
``It's their practical, it shows them what happens in a live show and all the things that can go wrong.'' Driver Eight has one EP under its belt, titled Lighthouse , and is now working on new material.
You can catch Driver Eight playing at The Brewery tomorrow Thursday night from 9pm.
Entry is free.
