CHUBBY CHECKER, the artist known as the King of the Twist, will perform in Newcastle as part of his upcoming Australian tour.

Checker exploded onto the music scene in 1960 and has not looked back since, remaining on the road for around 300 days of the year.

He has successfully sustained a career over 3 sfr1/2 decades and continues to attract huge crowds wherever he performs.

Checker has sold more than 250 thmillion records to date and is the only artist to have had nine double- sided hit records.

Born in South Carolina, he moved to Philadelphia and found a job working in a chicken store.

The store's owner set up a microphone so his young employee could sing to the customers.

He came to the attention of songwriter KAL MANN, who invited Checker to sing for a musical Christmas card based on Jingle Bells . A few months later, while still attending South Philadelphia High School, Checker made his first record called The Class . lw0 Just before he graduated from high school Checker's record company told him they had a song that had been done by someone else but they wanted him to record it again. Titled The Twist , it had been written and originally recorded by HANK BALLARD in 1958.

Checker went in to the studio and recorded the tune.

Before he graduated from high school, The Twist was a major hit.

Checker will perform The Twist and many more of his hits, including Let's Twist Again, Jingle Bell Rock, Limbo Rock, Black Cloud and Hey Bobba Needle , at NEWCASTLE PANTHERS on Tuesday, December 7. Tickets are on sale at the club and cost $35 per person.
