EVEN in its absence THE CAT EMPIRE receives accolades.
Last month the Melbourne fusion band scored six ARIA nominations while in Europe on a 25-date tour.
The group has enjoyed top billing slots at several big European festivals, winning over audiences with its blend of funk, Latin, hip-hop and Gypsy.
``We had a lot of opportunities to play to big crowds where we didn't have to warm up the crowd live as we've done in the past,'' Trumpeter HARRY ANGUS said.
``It felt really good to rock up somewhere we'd never been before and play to 10,000 people.
``Being a band that plays a few different styles and dabbles in a few different feelings when we play, it's interesting to see how different countries react.
``Just crossing the border from France into Germany, you found totally different musical tastes.
``Overall, the reactions were great they just reacted differently to different songs.
``The gift of being able to travel and play music and do what you love is an incredible one and I can't wait to do it all the time.'' The Cat Empire has enjoyed a run of successes since the release of its self-titled debut album last year.
The ARIAs, to be held at the SYDNEY SUPER DOME on Sunday, may see that success continue.
Their nominations include: Best Group, Best Urban Release, Breakthrough Artist Album, Breakthrough Artist Single, Engineer of the Year and Producer of the Year.
The Cat Empire will play at NEWCASTLE PANTHERS tonight with support from Melbourne outfit SCADDABOX. Tickets are available at the club.
Alternatively, bookings can be made on 4926 th2700.
