AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL AUSTRALIA will not be the only organisation to host a benefit concert in Newcastle this week.
ROCK AGAINST CANCER will be a huge event, with concerts over two nights and some of the city's best bands coming together to support the non-profit organisation.
Since it was conceived in 1993, Rock Against Cancer has been supported by some of Australia's best, including SILVERCHAIR, THE PORKERS, SCAR ZOO and SICK PUPPIES. The all-ages event will be held at THE BAND ROOM at NEWCASTLE LEAGUES CLUB on Friday and Saturday.
The event is a celebration of local music but also plays a vital part in raising money for research into cancer, the disease which remains Australia's leading cause of death.
Event founder BERNADETTE CUNNINGHAM said she developed the concept after having been deeply affected by the disease throughout her life.
``The concept was initiated in 1993 after my father and several other family members died of different types of cancer,'' Cunningham said.
``Several years ago, I was in the middle of organising another Rock Against Cancer festival when two of my best friends also became victims of this horrible disease.
``I almost chucked it in but realised that without it, Newcastle's people would not have the chance to participate in raising the necessary $2 thbillion needed in research funds.'' Friday night will see bands IMMUNE, OLD SOUND CENTRAL, THIS SHOTGUN KISS, STRANDED MIDWAY, DANGERFIELD and THE PINTS will perform from 7pm on Friday.
Rock Against Cancer has achieved widespread recognition since its development and bands from outside Newcastle have begun to show interest in it.
This year, Melbourne band SULO will open Saturday night's event alongside THE KARL KENNEDY AFFAIR, DIRTY PINK JEANS, THE COMMON 2CODE, TIGERMOTH, OSMIUM GRID and 1/2 SHOT.
