AFTER 27 years of playing its brand of party rock to the world, MENTAL AS ANYTHING remains one of the Australia's premiere live acts.
The band performs an average of 100 gigs a year and will return to the Hunter later this month to perform a string of dates.
Fans can expect to hear most of the band's hits from the early The Nips Are Getting Bigger to later favourites like Mr Natural. The Mentals as they are affectionately known are also set to embark on a new recording project.
The band will record versions of covers from the old days, with plans to make the recording process as spontaneous and simple as possible.
It has undergone numerous line- up changes over the years, with the loss of former members MURRAY COOK, PETER O'DOHERTY and REG MOMBASSA. Today the five-piece comprises MIKE CAEN, GREEDY SMITH, DAVID ``BIRD'' TWOHILL, DAVID ``DUCK'' BARRACLOUGH and MARTIN PLAZA. Since forming in art school in 1977 ``to raise a little extra drinking money'', Mental as Anything has played over 3500 shows across three continents.
The band released their debut album Get Wet in the late 1970s which spawned the drinking classic The Nips Are Getting Bigger. Hits followed with If You Leave Me Can I Come Too, Too Many Times, Live It Up, I Didn't Mean To Be Mean and Mr Natural.
Mental As Anything - Best Of was released in 2000 and the band celebrated with a performance in Vietnam as part of its whirlwind Australia Day 2000 Tour which also included the TAMWORTH COUNTRY MUSIC FESTIVAL. Catch Mental as Anything at WESTS LEAGUES CLUB on March 18, SOLDIERS POINT BOWLING CLUB on March 19 and BELMONT 16FT SAILING CLUB on March 20. Tickets are on sale from the venues.
