SOME people were born to succeed and Melbourne singer-songwriter MISSY HIGGINS is one of them.
The TRIPLE J UNEARTHED winner is on a national jaunt supporting the JOHN BUTLER TRIO, adding to an already impressive list that has seen the 20-year-old tour with GEORGE, THE WAIFS and BIC RUNGA. Higgins has managed to find time in between her tour commitments to record her debut album in the US with producer JOHN PORTER, whose past credits include RYAN ADAMS and THE SMITHS. The album will follow the release of her self-titled debut EP which was recorded after she won the Victorian leg of the Unearthed competition in 2001.
It was with the encouragement of her sister that Higgins decided to enter the competition which has launched the careers of bands such as THE BUMBLEBEEZ, GRINSPOON, KILLING HEIDI and MUZZY PEP.
``My sister entered me in Unearthed and I never thought anyone was going to hear my music but then this happened before I even realised it, I had a record deal,'' Higgins said.
Higgins honed her talent singing in a jazz band with her brother before she started writing songs at 15.
She showed potential early when her first song All For Believing won her the Unearthed competition.
Influenced by many styles, Higgins writes her material on the piano and also plays guitar.
Higgins will release The Scar EP on July 26 featuring the songs Scar, Casualty, Dancing Dirt Into the Snow and the live favourite The Cactus That Found the Beat. Her debut album is set for a September release.
Following her John Butler tour Higgins will head out again to support PETE MURRAY on his BAIL ME OUT TOUR which will arrive at NEWCASTLE PANTHERS on July 31.
Higgins will support the John Butler Trio at CIVIC THEATRE NEWCASTLE on July 6, 7 and 8.
