Kelley Gang Steals The Show

Who: Dan Kelley and the Alpha Males
Where: The Cambridge Hotel
When: Thursday February 19, 2004

DAN KELLY has never been one to insist on throwing himself into the limelight.

The Brisbane-born guitarist spent the early part of his career playing in numerous bands including PAUL KELLY, BIC RUNGA and DAN BRODIE & THE BROKEN ARROWS before he formed his own.

It is not that Kelly lacked original material; rather, he did not have the confidence.

``It's been about three years since I've been doing my own thing rather than just playing guitar in other people's bands,'' Kelly said.

``I just got to a point where I felt I should give it a go.

``It's much more satisfying to get out there and play your own stuff . th. th.

although it's a lot scarier playing your own stuff.'' Kelly formed the basis of his band THE ALPHA MALES three years ago.

``They were named the Alpha Males about a year ago just because they are all really dominant, charismatic guys and I'm not, so it's sort of ironic.'' The band has undergone numerous changes but has had a steady line-up for the past 18 months.

It released the debut EP Mercy O'Mercy in 2003 and will follow it up this year with the debut album Dan Kelly & The Alpha Males Sing the Tabloid Blues. Kelly said the album had taken a different musical slant to the EP which was ``a lot more rock'n'roll''.

``I worked with a lot of people who influenced it in a good way like the producer Magoo.

``Sonically, it sounds a lot different from the last one.'' Dan Kelly & The Alpha Males are on the road to promote the new single Step Forward and will perform at the CAMBRIDGE HOTEL on February 19. Kelly said punters could expect to hear songs taken from the album as well as brand new material. Dan Kelly & The Alpha Males will join Paul Kelly for a national tour later this year.
