PICTURE 150 people in a room, dancing live on television for 90 minutes to win $1000.
It sounds bizarre, but the concept has proved a winner with the thousands of CHANNEL V viewers who tune in every Saturday night to watch ROOM 208.
Channel V is taking Room 208 on the road for the nationwide TOUR DE DANCE, which will transmit live from the MERCURY HOTEL on October 2.
Since the program first hit screens in 2001, it has achieved cult status with viewers who watch participants strut their stuff for the chance to be voted best dancer via phone or SMS and walk away with $1000.
When Room 208 arrives in Newcastle, under 18s will have the opportunity to shake their things and win.
Show host MIKE KERRY will get behind the decks with guest DJs and also be joined by fellow Room 208 hosts YUMI STYNES and CLAIRE DE LUNE .
Kerry said Tour de Dance is targeted toward a younger crowd in a bid to provide more under- age events.
``Our core audience is people aged 15 to 18 and that's a deliberate policy because we feel that there isn't enough under-age entertainment around,'' Kerry said.
``They aren't given anywhere to go, so that's what we're trying to do with Room 208.
'' Although the show primarily attracts a younger crowd, Kerry said it is a big hit with fans of all ages for a number of reasons.
``It's a very funny show but I think the reason for its success is because people are funny and the show is a bit of an escapism.
``The audience tends to vote for people who demonstrate real dancing talent and I think people enjoy watching good dancers.
'' The Mercury Hotel will host Room 208 from 6pm to 9pm.
Tickets are $15 and must be purchased in advance from PDMS or on 4925 th3996.
``The audience tends to vote for people who demonstrate real dancing talent and I think people enjoy watching good dancers,'' Kerry said.
