Local band Mickeyfin will go out with a bang next week before taking a lengthy break away from the live scene.
The four piece will support Melbourne's Rocket Science during its show at Newcastle University's Bar On the Hill next Thursday. The band will then farewell bassist Stew Taylor who will move to Lismore to complete his degree at a contemporary music school. As a result, Mickyfin frontman Josh Bowyer said Taylor would only return to Newcastle to perform at large scale shows like as the Rocket Science gig. ``We're taking a break from live shows this year but I'll still be writing new songs because we plan to record an EP later in the year,' Bowyer said. Plans for an EP release trail a few changes in the Mickyfin camp following the departure of its bassist and drummer in late 2002. The pair were replaced by drummer Joel Stanton and Taylor, both of whom had formerly performed in local funk outfit fZunk. According to Bowyer, the pair's funk roots have allowed the band to take a new edge and add a new level of groove to its sound. ``They've added a real funk sound to the band which makes it a bit more fun to play, we're even starting to get a few people dancing at the gigs.'' Mickyfin will be on stage from 7.30pm when it supports Rocket Science on March 13 at the Bar On The Hill. Check out the band's new website at www.mickyfin.com
