Music School With a Modern Appeal

What: The Young Players Contemporary Music School
Author: Jade Lazerevic

A NEW music school with a contemporary edge will open its doors to budding musicians on May 15.

The Young Players Contemporary Music School is the brainchild of local muso Chris Porter and aims to provide young people with a chance to learn an instrument at an affordable price.

The school is open to students aged between 12 and 21 and lessons are at the Palais Royale and Newcastle Community Arts Centre. Sessions are after school and on weekends.

Classes include tuition on acoustic and electric guitar, electric bass, drumming, piano, keyboards, violin, percussion, voice and turntables.

'We cater to the contemporary music scene such as rock, funk, folk, blues, country, punk, rock 'n' roll, hip hop and jazz,' Porter said.

Tutors in the program range from professional musicians to music teachers and cater for beginners to advanced students.

Porter said the concept had been two years in the making and was designed to be an enjoyable experience for those who wished to learn.

'Students learn at their own pace, no grading, tests or marking,' he said.

'Just lots of fun and playing and developing.'

Course costs are $15 per hour and information is available at www.artshunter.com.au/ypcms
