Sons of Famous Musicians Make Their Own Mark on the Industry

Who: Betchadupa, The Tea Party
Where: Civic Theatre
Author: Jade Lazerevic
When: Wednesday February 13, 2002

IGNORE the fact that half of the band features the sons of two influential musicians and you will discover that Betchadupa has worthily earned its title as the next big thing.

Frontman Liam Finn is the son of Crowded House's Neil Finn and drummer Matt Eccles is the son of The Angels' Brent Eccles. But when the two 18 year olds met in New Zealand six years ago, the pair realised they shared a musical chemistry that was second to none.

'It was quite a long time ago when me and Liam first met, we wrote a couple of songs together and it just went on from there,' Eccles said.

'Over the time we've been together we've formed a real tight friendship as well and a musical partnership.'

Originally from Australia, Eccles relocated to New Zealand with his parents in tow at 16 to pursue his career with the band.

'My family came over for a few different reasons, partly because I wanted to be in this band and because they were quite impressed with what we were coming up with.'

'It wasn't as serious as it is now but they were fully into making the band work and my Dad is originally from New Zealand anyway.'

The group will perform in Newcastle for the first time when it supports The Tea Party at Civic Theatre on February 13.

Betchadupa will release a new single titled Sleepy Head on Monday followed closely by the release of a debut album.
