Cool Jazz for Summer Nights

Who: Saxanova
Where: QWB - Queens Wharf Brewery
When: Thursday January 18, 2001

POPULAR jazz ensemble SAXANOVA has undergone a line-up change, with drummer DANE BALDWIN (pictured centre) moving to rock'n'rollers HORNET (formerly LITTLE HORNET). Remaining members pianist LEITH DIXON (left) and saxophonist CRAIG LEMBKE (right) will continue to perform with replacement drummer DAVE RICHARDSON in the hot seat.

Tomorrow night at the Brewery the new Saxanova line-up will be joined by upright bassman ANDREW WALLACE of FISH FRY and the DARYL ABERHART TRIO. Wallace joins the trio only at The Brewery every third Thursday for the venue's jazz nights, and for some functions work.

Dixon said the Brewery gigs, with the addition of Wallace, were geared more towards material 'more along the bebop lines, more instrumental, less vocally based'.

The Brewery's Thursday night jazz roster rotates Saxanova with the FUNKY DO DAS and JJ SAM. On Sunday afternoon, from 3pm until 6pm, Saxanova will revert to its current trio configuration for a cool jazz afternoon at the Kotara Bowling Club.

As a trio, the group performs 'jazz standards and late-night dance from the 1950s and 1960s'.

Jazz has been keeping the members and guests entertained at the Kotara club during summer, introduced by the club's new secretary manager CHRIS MCDOUGALL. A staff member said Sunday afternoon jazz, which finishes this weekend, would be reviewed at a future club board meeting. TE
