It's Your Chance to See Renee

Who: Renee Geyer
Where: Western Suburbs Leagues Club
Author: Michael Gadd
When: Friday February 23, 2001

THE timeless Renee Geyer will return to Newcastle for a visit that she says is long overdue.

Geyer will play on Friday night at Wests Leagues Club before she makes her way to Sydney to perform at a Mardis Gras event.

Geyer, who tours sporadically all year round, will bring Sydney musicians Mark Kennedy, Harry Bruce Paul Burton and Melbourne keyboard player Bruce Haymes .

Her appeal has been far-reaching all over the world for more than 30 years.

When asked about this she replied: 'People come to see somebody speak to them, and while my music probably isn't life-changing, I think my performances touch the audience in some way.'

And it does.

In the 1970s her repertoire flowed gracefully between pop, rock, soul and blues.

Geyer settled in America where she began writing and broadening her musical base to include rhythm and blues, jazz, country and Latin rhythms.

In 1988 she formed a group with legendary funkster Hamish Stuart of Average White Band fame, recording an album for release in America.

She also toured and recorded with everyone from Chaka Khan , Buddy Guy and Sting through to Joe Cocker , Julio Inglesias and Neil Diamond , occasionally nipping back to Australia where she was still in demand.

While she hasn't been writing as much as she says she should be, many of the songs she performs have been written for her by close friends such as Paul Kelly and music identities from all over the world and from all genres.

TE has two double passes to see Renee Geyer at Wests.
