SYDNEY Latino rockers FLOYD VINCENT & THE CHILDBRIDES are capitalising on the popularity of RICKY MARTIN in Europe, where the band has just released its two-year-old album in six countries.
The fabulous LAST EXIT MOTEL album was released in December to coincide with the band's third visit to Europe in the past six months. The biggest hit of four singles released from the album in Australia were I GAVE MYSELF TO YOU, which gained high rotation on TRIPLE J. The Childbrides have a cult following in Australia, despite little airplay on Triple J and none from commercial radio.
Playing on Friday, January 14, at The Brewery and on Friday, January 28 at the Northern Star, The Childbrides have distributed the CD to Italy, Switzerland, Hungary, Germany and Spain, where radio is playing all four tracks.
According to the band manager DANNY DIJIOVANNI, the Latin flavour has conquered cultural differences, particularly with their $6 STEAK AND CHIPS, which is a parody of life on the road.
'They get the humour of that one,' he said.
'They understand the concept, especially in Germany and Italy.'
Being with multinational affiliated UNIVERSAL MUSIC has helped, according to Dijiovanni, but it has its ups and downs.
Universal Australia managing director PAUL KRIGE approved funding for the band's last four-week tour, which covered 12,000km in four weeks!
But the company's German office reportedly failed to promote scheduled shows there and three gigs had to be cancelled.
'We drove from Budapest to Hamburg, around 1200km, to find that the name of the venue was wrong, and we had to cancel the CD launch,' Dijiovanni said.
But The Childbrides were wildly successful in Italy, where promoters found plenty of work for the exciting four-piece band, with further success in Switzerland, Hungary and Spain.
The group has recorded demos for its next album, tentatively scheduled for a June release, to coincide with the European summer.
