BASS player CHARLIE LIMA, from Melbourne trio OSCARLIMA, sold his cafe in Richmond before embarking on this national support slot for MIDNIGHT OIL. His band Oscarlima will support MIDNIGHT OIL on Sunday at the Newcastle Workers Club.
Lima and lead singer/guitarist ELROY FALCON have been in bands together since the start of high school.
But it is coming to crunch time for the trio they formed with friend and drummer SVEN GRINNER. 'I sold my cafe to concentrate on my baby, and the Midnight Oil tour,' Lima said.
'You sort of think if we don't start selling albums soon you've got to wonder why you end up putting all this time and money into something that's never going to recoup.'
The result of almost 15 years playing music has paid off on the Oscarlima's album DESERT CARAVAN, an eclectic mix of catchy pop songs that is impossible to get off your stereo.
The album was TRIPLE J feature album earlier this year, and IF YOU WANNA BE MY FRIEND, BARE HANDS, SELL IT TO THE WORLD and THINGS THAT YOU SAY have been getting plenty of air play ever since.
For the past five years the power pop band has focused on turning this 'hobby' into a commercially viable venture.
'We thought if we're going to be a driving force in the Australian music scene, we're going to have to mix it up a little bit,' he said of the mix of styles.
'So we just took the time out and concentrated on writing songs and just being really good players.'
Lima and Falcon, who played in cover bands together in Tasmania before relocating to Melbourne, have always written their own songs separately.
