ORIGINAL acoustic rock band DUSK made its full band debut at the Northern Star Hotel on a Wednesday night a fortnight ago, which proves that good things come to those who make the pilgrimage to venues midweek.
Dusk plays an 'eclectic mix of slow songs and upbeat epic rock ballads' according to their bio 'with influences from JEFF BUCKLEY to EMPEROR to JEWEL'. As a duo, guitarist/vocalist KATIE MAGRIPLIS and guitarist (who sometimes wields a bass guitar) SCOTT JOBSON, Dusk was semi-finalists in the University of Newcastle band competition last year.
Forming in August, 1998, it has kept 'a relatively low profile' while working prodigiously on 30 to 40 gorgeous new tunes, now augmented live by the addition of drummer TASMAN ELLEM. In PLATINUM STUDIOS last week Dusk put the finishing touches to a debut mini-album of eight songs, tentatively titled PAINTING BEAUTIFUL PICTURES IN THE DARK. Magriplis's lyrics and natural sense of melody paints beautiful word pictures indeed.
Think BETH ORTON, NATALIE MERCHANT or Sydney's CACTUS CHILD for directions to the world this emotive singer/ songwriter inhabits.
Last week the band played its third SJ's Hotel BAND SLAM. Catch Dusk this Saturday night at the Hunter On Hunter with KIND and HUNGRY GHOSTS. Meanwhile at the same Northern Star gig as Dusk made its debut, so too did EQUIPMENT, the new trio of THE PORKERS' guitarist DAVE POWER, with bass player and drummer.
Watch these pages in coming weeks for the full wrap-up on Equipment, which had the house on its feet by the end of the night.
