Dancers to Burn Floor

What: Burn the Floor
Where: Newcastle Entertainment Centre
When: Tuesday August 17, 1999

FORTY-four dancers from 11 countries will perform in Newcastle in August when BURN THE FLOOR arrives at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre on August 17.

At a media conference in Newcastle last week the general manager of DUET ENTERTAINMENT, HARLEY MEDCALFE provided details of the arena production, described as 'a choreographic showcase'.

Medcalfe, a friend of entertainer ELTON JOHN, and a promoter who handles John's Australasian concert tours, told the media the idea came to him after attending the Piano Man's 50th birthday party.

Elton John had arranged for a ballroom dancing display to entertain guests. Medcalfe said he had seen 'STRICTLY BALLROOM, but what I saw there was sexy ballroom'.

'The tension and the energy and the electricity that these kids create together is unbelievable,' he said.

BURN THE FLOOR is the result of two years of planning involving with Medcalfe and an international creative team. Five hundred shows have been booked to play to a worldwide audience between June and the end of next year.

The show will comprise classical and contemporary dance.

Tickets go on sale Monday, May 10. TE
