'THE radio still plays, amongst the mangled metal frames, petroleum spirit days.'
The line is from the song SON OF MUSTANG FORD which launched the career of UK band SWERVEDRIVER in 1990.
Like so much of the band's music the lyric is inspired by car culture, in this case the final scene in JOHN CARPENTER'S adaptation of the STEPHEN KING book CHRISTINE. Amidst the shoe-gazer hype of the early 1990s Britpop scene, Swervedriver was ignored by the hipset while embraced by the Grunge followers.
In 1991 the band supported SOUNDGARDEN then RIDE in two tours of the United States.
After key personnel changes between 1992 and 1993, the band released a follow-up to RAISE called MEZCAL HEAD with a lead single DUEL after the STEVEN SPIELBERG car flick.
In 1995 the band released its last album on the CREATION label EJECTOR SEAT RESERVATION and has just released its latest album 99TH DREAM in Australia through SHOCK RECORDS. Their POWDERFINGER support gig at Newcastle Workers Club on December 2 should be a scorcher. TE
