Ska's Soulmates

Who: Bouncing Souls
Where: The Cambridge Hotel
When: Wednesday November 25, 1998

MEMBERS of New York's BOUNCING SOULS, playing tonight at The Cambridge Hotel, all met in grade school in New Jersey and have learnt to do everything together.

According to bass player BRYAN KIENLEN the members 'were young kids, playing soccer together on the same teams and riding BMX bikes together'.

'In high school we played instruments together,' he said.

For the past nine years Bouncing Souls, named after the DR MARTEN boot favoured by followers of ska music around the world, have been creating music which is 'good energy and fun'.

The band does not label itself as ska, or punk, but it has elements of each.

'It's not hardcore, coz it's more fun than that, but there's bits of (ska), that you can sense, same with punk, but without any one typical characteristic,' he said.

'It's more just like positive spirits of them.'

The band's lyrics are fun and positive, 'recognising things in our own life and having a laugh about it rather than bitching about it'.

'We've got enough people pointing fingers at each other and bitching.'
