Who: The Manhattan Transfer
Where: Civic Theatre
When: Thursday September 1, 2005

CLASSIC New York vocal group The Manhattan Transfer will bring its distinctive sound to Newcastle as part of its upcoming Australian tour.

It will appear at Civic Theatre Newcastle on September 1.

Since the early '70s, The Manhattan Transfer has been pushing and redefining the boundaries of vocal music in the context of jazz, pop and various other styles.

Along the way, the collective efforts of vocalists Cheryl Bentyne, Tim Hauser, Alan Paul and Janis Siegel have earned The Manhattan Transfer a collection of Grammy awards and a loyal fan base.

It all began about 30 years ago when Hauser worked as a marketing executive and New York cab driver with dreams of creating a vocal group.

It was during a fateful cab ride that Hauser met aspiring singer Laurel Mass aac , who was familiar with an album Hauser had made with an earlier Manhattan Transfer combo.

A few weeks later Hauser met Siegel at a party and the groundwork was laid for The Manhattan Transfer.

New York's club scene was where the group found its feet and in 1975 they released their self-titled album, also enjoying success in Europe.

Over the years the group has released a string of hits including Birdland, Boy From New York City and Until I Met You (Corner Pocket). The latest chapter in the quartet's history is the album Vibrate which explores the traditional and progressive sides of jazz Latin, world and pop flavours.

Tickets are on sale now. Bookings on 4929 1977.
