PETER Brocklehurst is not your typical tenor.
The world of classical singing was so far removed from the world he lived in that for most of his life singing the music he loved was just a dream.
It's a rags-to-riches tale.
The Australian singer grew up in a family of eight children and lived what he described as a gypsy lifestyle, moving from place to place. While opera was always his passion, opportunities were few and Brocklehurst did not have the chance to attend music school. He couldn't read music or speak Italian.
He left school at 14 but now often tells people that he has become the most educated drop-out in Australia.
While working as a cobbler, a chance meeting with Melbourne businessman Nick Columb encouraged Brocklehurst and his career has since skyrocketed.
He signed a contract with Sony Music in 2003 and released the album Boots and All, which floated around the top of the classical charts for 10 months.
He has performed at the Sydney Opera House, sung with Marina Prior and recently toured as the tenor in Cavalcade - Reins of Fire. Brocklehurst will play two shows in the Hunter this week, performing at Tempus Two Winery at Pokolbin on Friday December 9 and Newcastle Conservatorium of Music on Saturday.
Tickets for both performances are available from Soundworld Newcastle, Beaumont St Beat and online at bigtix.com.au
