THE Hunter's premier jazz and blues festival is here again.

The Newcastle Jazz Festival will be held in the heart of the CBD for its 18th consecutive year from Friday, August 26, to Sunday, August 28.

The festival's bands and entertainers will perform at three locations within the CBD over the three days.

Those venues include the City Hall's four function rooms, Finnegan's Irish Pub and the Clarendon Hotel.

The Rachel Hamilton Trio will play the first song to kick the festival off in the Clarendon on Friday at 4pm.

Entertainers who will play at the three venues over the weekend include Balled Eagle, Black Mountain, Bruce Mathiske, Bob Henderson, Carol Ralph, David Ridyard Band, Diannia Heather, Grandiva, Hot Licks, The Dungeon 17-Piece Big Band, George Washingmachine, Janet Seidel Trio and Quintet, John Wilson's Dixieland Band, Le Toot Jazz Ensemble, Licorice Allsorts, Paul Furniss's San Francisco, Peoria, Swingout, Viva, Wobbly Boot and James Flynn.

Other highlights of the festival include the Saturday Night Gala Black and White Ball and the Gospel Sing-A- Long on Sunday at Town Hall.

The Gangsters' (Ball's organisers) will expect the Al Capones and Marilyn Monroes to show off their best 1920s, '30s and '40s gear before they will be let into the ballroom to bop away to a 17-piece orchestra, the Dungeon Big Band and James Flynn and the Black Mountain Jazz Band.

No bookings are required as a pass is included when a full weekend ticket is purchased.

A full weekend ticket is $115. Saturday session prices are $35 for 11am to 6pm and $55 for 11am to midnight. Sunday sessions are 9am to 6pm, $35; 9am to 1pm, $15; and 1pm to 6pm, $25.
