IT has been 15 years since Australian audiences were introduced to the sounds of JOHNNY DIESEL AND THE INJECTORS. The band produced the highest- selling Australian album of 1989 with its self-titled debut and picked up Best New Talent at the ARIA awards.
The artist has since shortened his stage name to DIESEL and continues strongly in 2004 with the release of the album Singled Out. Singled Out takes a stripped-back look at Diesel's career, following his catalogue of hits with an acoustic slant on tracks such as Tip of My Tongue, Soul Revival, 15 Feet of Snow, All Come Together, Come to Me and Cry In Shame. Diesel said the album was the result of many years touring as a solo artist.
``I've been doing so many solo shows these last few years it seemed obvious to record that way.
` It was me, an audience, an acoustic guitar or two and that's it,'' he said.
``Sometimes you can end up with the quintessential version of a song that way. I think Cry In Shame and Come To Me turned out like that.'' Diesel turned to the studio to do justice to his debut hit, Don't Need Love , slide guitar instrumental, Would I Want You and new ballad, She Won't Need Words , which saw him play piano and cello as well as guitars.
He also covers FRED NEIL'S classic Everybody's Talkin. ``Every night you find a different lilt playing solo,'' Diesel said.
``Your playing changes, the arrangement wanders this way or that.
``It's like some of these songs have really found their place now.'' Singled Out was recently nominated for an ARIA award for Best Adult Contemporary Album, placing him up against GEORGE, JIMMY LITTLE, LISA MILLER and PAUL KELLY. Diesel will play at the NORTHERN STAR HOTEL on Saturday night with AMY VEE .
Tickets will cost $15.
He will be back in the Hunter to play A DAY ON THE GREEN at BIMBADGEN ESTATE on Saturday, November 20 with ELVIS COSTELLO, JOE CAMILLERI, STEPHEN CUMMINGS and MICK THOMAS.
