Band Has An Urge For Major Revamp

Who: The Urge
Where: Delany Hotel
When: Friday July 9, 2004

A DEDICATION to live performance has allowed the popularity of THE URGE to continue to grow.

The four piece has picked up regular gigs across the Hunter, Sydney and the Cental Coast.

``The crowds just keep growing every gig we play,'' lead guitarist MICK DALLAS said.

With a full schedule booked until the end of the year, Dallas said the band looked forward to refining its live show and constantly updating its repertoire.

``We have completely revamped our set list, we have a new repertoire, new image, more exciting stage show,'' frontman MURRAY ROACH said.

The Urge has earned a reputation as a group of seriously committed musicians but began finding it difficult to break back into the big rooms around town after a short hiatus in 2002.

``Agents had a perception that we were old rockers,'' Murray said.

``They had this outdated idea that you were washed up after your 25th birthday.'' With an average age of 30, The Urge is out to prove its critics wrong.

Under the wing of new management, The Urge is back and is revising its repertoire to appeal to a younger set of punters, while still giving existing fans the favourite tunes they have come to expect.

With a new set list including CREED, FOO FIGHTERS, GRINSPOON, THE ANDROIDS and BLINK 182, The Urge look set to appeal to a wide variety of punters.

``We are finding more and more 18 to 22 year olds are getting to our shows but we have kept some great tunes from the '60s, '70s and '80s because they just work so well,'' bass player JASON HOLLIS said.

``It's nice to see people rediscovering the pleasure of a great lead break or power vocals or some tasty chops on the bass and drums,'' drummer NINO DEVITIS added.

Murray said The Urge planned to record in the near future.

``We will be working hard doing live shows until well into next year, pretty much without a break, but if things work out as we expect we may be in the studio early in 2005.'' Catch The Urge at the MAITLAND VALLEY BREWERY on Friday, the CATHO PUB on Sunday, the HOTEL DELANY on July 9 and the EAST MAITLAND BOWLO on July 17.
