MORE than 50 local, national and international female artists will descend upon Newcastle next week during the annual HOWLFEST celebrations.
Among the performers will be Canadian artist EMBER SW T , a regular visitor to Newcastle whose strong-minded lyrics have landed her comparisons to US contemporary ANI DI FRANCO .
``I think it's important to sing about what we believe in, from an honest place, and communicate that to an audience in an effort to break down barriers between strangers,'' Sw t said .
``Our songs are topical, yes, but there are certainly personal politics within the repertoire, where I sing about healing from heartbreak or being open to loved ones or being comfortable in our skin.
'' Like her lyrics, her music also touches on a variety on ideas which mix up everything from jazz and funk to doo-wop and reggae.
``I don't choose the styles in the music, the styles choose me, I think! ``I have always felt comfortable experimenting with d ferent genres and have been open to many types of music, which helps me to learn from many types of music.
'' Sw t will perform during HOWLfest at MORROW PARK BOWLING CLUB on January 31 at 11.
45pm and again on February 1 at 9pm.
HOWLfest will continue across five days from January 28 to February 1 and feature live music, workshops, films and art at venues around the city.
