Drifters Not a Hit And Miss Affair

Who: The Drifters
Where: Cardiff Panthers
When: Friday November 12, 2004

IN the history of popular music there are a few vocal groups who qualify as members of the ROCK'N'ROLL HALL OF FAME. THE DRIFTERS are one of those groups.

For the past 40 years The Drifters have maintained a reputation as one of the world's finest vocal groups.

The Drifters linked '50s R&B with '60s soul and epitomised the vocal- group sound of New York.

The material The Drifters recorded came from a variety of sources, including the songwriting teams of JERRY LEIBER and MIKE STOLLER, DOC POMUS and MORT SHUMAN, and GERRY GOFFIN and CAROLE KING. The name of the group was chosen by CLYDE McPHATTER, the first singer in a long line of lead voices, and he could not have chosen a better name.

Many members drifted in and out of the band since its beginnings.

McPhatter and BEN thE. thKING are just some of the great singers who have passed through the group.

Today BILLY WASHINGTON leads the group.

Washington, now aged 60, joined The Drifters at an early age and had no idea about the great experiences ahead for him: the many people he would meet, the places he would go and the success he would enjoy.

With Washington is WAYNE FOSTER, who has been with The Drifters for 25 years, and newest member PATRICK JACKSON, who spent the early part of his career performing with THE COASTERS. Backed by an all-star band, The Drifters recreate the memories that have produced four decades of hits.

The Drifters' classic back catalogue includes Under the Boardwalk, Save the Last Dance for Me, Kissing in the Back Row, Like Sister and Brother, Spanish Harlem, This Magic Moment, Up on the Roof, There Goes My Baby and On Broadway.

The Drifters will perform in the MACQUARIE ROOM at CARDIFF PANTHERS on Friday, November 12.

Tickets cost $20 per person and go on sale Monday, September 27.
