Walker Navigates Way for Trio

Who: The Necessary Few, Michael McCarthy
Where: Morrow Park Bowling Club
When: Wednesday September 3, 2003

FRESH from the release of his latest album Navigational Skills , Australian blues and roots artist MATT WALKER is set to make his debut at SALARIUM this week.

Although the album marks Walker's third studio release, it is the first recording that he has done with his band the NECESSARY FEW.

The Necessary Few, featuring bassist GRANT CUMMERFORD and drummer ROGER BERGODAZ, was formed 18 months ago on the spur of the moment when Walker was set for a 40-date tour.

``Last year I had a national tour booked that I was meant to play as a duo but when we decided to take a break, I had about 50 gigs and didn't know what I was going to do,'' Walker said.

``I didn't feel like getting in a car by myself so I put together the Necessary Few.

'' Walker said the union has been a success and the trio had hit it off both personally and musically.

``It really clicked and they come from reggae, funk and r&b backgrounds - which is what I'm into - so I have a really solid rhythm section.

'' As well as the album, Walker has spent time touring the US with 20 MILES , a band that features members of the JON SPENCER BLUES EXPLOSION.

``It was amazing because it was one of those years where I didn't think I was going overseas and then all of a sudden I got an email asking I wanted to do the tour.

'' Walker has been playing guitar for the past 15 years and has supported the likes of BOB DYLAN, PATTI SMITH, NICK CAVE & THE BAD SEEDS, GOMEZ and THE CRUEL SEA.

His sights are now firmly set on Australia and he plans to release an instrumental album in early 2004.

Matt Walker and the Necessary Few will perform at SALARIUM COUCH BAR at MORROW PARK BOWLING CLUB tonight from 7pm with support from MICHAEL MCCARTHY.

Entry is $10.
