IN the past 12 months, the Australian hip hop scene has truly sky rocketed.
With the support of TRIPLE J and a growing acceptance of homegrown artists, acts like THE HERD and DOWNSYDE have garnered new support from fans nationwide.
Newcastle will showcase the cream of the crop when the KRUSHN 3 hip hop event is held at STAR NEWCASTLE on Friday night, featuring acts such as Downsyde.
Like The Herd, Downsyde is a hip hop collective of MCs and DJs but with the added element of live instruments.
The group was formed in 1996 by MCs OPTAMUS and DYNA-MIKES who later recruited the skills of MC DAZASTAH and DJ ARMEE.
With the addition of drummer SALVATORE and keyboardist CHEEKY, Downsyde was born.
``It was about two years ago that we brought a drummer and sampler in,'' DJ Armee said.
``We were doing a lot of festivals and we just loved that whole live element.
It has brought a whole new feeling to the show.
'' As well as the release of the album ifThe Land of The Giants , the year has delivered plenty of special moments.
lw0Highlights include gigs at the BIG DAY OUT, BYRON BAY BLUES BLUES AND ROOTS FESTIVAL and a support slot alongside GRANDMASTER FLASH.
Following the band's show at Newcastle, it will play at SPLEN DOUR IN THE GRASS.
The entry fee is $10.
`We've never been to Newcastle, so we're really looking forward to it.
