MELBOURNE pop rockers THE ANYONES have performed in Newcastle twice before.
And both times they have been the support act.
When The Anyones return this week, it will be the band's first headline show in Newcastle.
``Both times we have played there with YOU AM I and MAGIC DIRT , so we have always been the support act,'' founding member STEVE PINKERTON said.
``So it will be fun to get up there and do our own show finally.
'' Formed around the basis of multi-instrumentalist brothers Steve and MAL PINKERTON , The Anyones formed in Melbourne in 1997 and the five-piece line-up was complete by 1999.
The band released a debut album, Lonerider , in 2000 and the self-titled follow up earlier this year after signing with SHOCK RECORDS.
``Mal and I were always playing music, although we actually started playing in school bands and orchestral bands,'' Steve said.
The experience proved worthy for the pair, who now include cello, flute and strings into their sound.
``Scarily, yes, we draw on all the stuff we learnt in high school with the school band and orchestra,'' Steve said.
``But it's great being able to do it yourself because you've got this one-man orchestra and you can overlay all these strings and make it really lush and orchestral without having to go outside the group.
'' The band's formula of pop rock has landed the band support slots alongside the likes of THE VINES, MORRISSEY and THE MUSIC .
And when it comes to sharing the stage with some of the biggest names in the business, Pinkerton proudly admits to acting like a bit of a groupie.
``I'm a real sucker and I get photos with everyone we play with like a real loser, but everyone has been nice.
'' The Anyones perform at the NORTHERN STAR HOTEL tonight.
