JAZZ enthusiasts will have no choice but to get up and dance at The Newcastle and Hunter Jazz Club Ball to be held on May 26 at Wests Leagues Club. Entertainment will be provided by popular award-winning Sydney ensemble, The New Wolverine Jazz Orchestra. Last year the band won the Goldkette Foundation Award for 'musical excellence in the Goldkette tradition'.
This made it the first jazz band to receive the international award which is now in its third year.
The New Wolverine Jazz Band has also been nominated three times running in the Jazz Group of the Year category of the Australian Mo Awards. Its nominations in 1998, 1999 and 2000 made it the first traditional jazz group to be nominated in the 25-year history of the awards.
Trish Maund of the Newcastle and Hunter Jazz Club said the band is always popular at the annual Newcastle Jazz Festival in August.
'They are a dedicated and talented group of musicians who authentically recreate the jazz music of the 1920s, '30s and '40s; the era when dancing was very popular,' she said.
'They just make you want to get up and dance.'
The night kicks off at 7pm in the Starlight Room of Wests Leagues Club. Tickets priced at $45 cover a three-course sit-down dinner and entertainment.
