New Venue Promoting Originals Onmusic Scene

What: RMS
Where: Shortland Hotel
When: Friday July 6, 2001

DANCE music, DJs and original bands will come together at the Shortland Hotel for a new weekly night of entertainment celebrating local music.

Nubrium lead singer Danny Beazley is the brainchild behind the concept, which he hopes will break down the barriers between bands and dance music in Newcastle.

The show, dubbed RMS, will be held each Friday night and feature a mix of original music of all styles.

This week will host a rural hip-hop theme night complete with hay bales, wagon wheels and other country paraphernalia.

Local buskers will perform and sounds from Beck, Talking Heads and Johnny Cash will be supplied by DJs The Doctor and The Assassin. Last week saw punk band Operation Lager play their final gig before they take a few months off to refine the group.

Beazley originally intended to host a series of dance parties titled Emergency Doof Parties at the hotel after it recently went under new management.

'I approached the manager but he was more interested in local original bands,' Beazley said.

Beazley has called on local groups to play at the gigs in an effort to create a new venue for music fans in Newcastle.

'I want to make it Newcastle's number one original music venue,' Beazley said.

'I want it to have a bit more of a feel to it and introduce the bands formally.'

The show will begin at 9pm.
