Talented Dancers Coming

Who: Ceol Chiarrai
Where: Maitland City Bowling Club
When: Friday August 31, 2001

BEFORE Riverdance and Spirit of the Dance performed to delighted audiences around the world, there was Ceol Chiarrai. Ceol Chiarrai, which translates to music of the kingdom, was founded by the company's artistic director Michael Carr back in 1985, long before the worldwide phenomenon occurred.

The talented performers from the company are drawn from all over Ireland and for many of the performers this year, it will be their first trip overseas.

The company is now seen as a launching pad for Ireland's most gifted and talented performers.

'Going back to 1993, before Riverdance was ever heard of, we were the first people the producers came to,' Carr said.

'Four of our dancers then went into Riverdance and they're still with the production now.'

Carr has many fond memories of past Ceol Chiarrai performers like Bernadette Flynn who have gone on to perform all over the world with dance extraordinaire Michael Flatley. 'We were in Chicago and Michael Flatley saw her dance,' he said. 'When we came home, Michael approached her and she is now the lead female in Lord of the Dance and these days, commands a six-figure salary.'

This year the dance troupe have prepared a new show which began a national tour of Australia last month.

Spirit of Ireland is the latest production from the group and allows audiences to see the artistic creations of some of Ireland's most acclaimed young performers.

The show is choreographed by leading Irish choreographer Richard Griffin and features a modern influence under the musical direction of Eric Cunningham. The company comprises of of 16 performers and an exceptional vocalist with ages ranging from 16 to 24.

Maitland City Bowling Club will host the show on August 21.

Tickets for the show are available from the club for $30 adults, $25 concession and $20 for children.
