IN the late 1950s, when rock 'n' roll burst into our lives, it was brought to us by some stars we will never forget.
Some of these youngsters ranged from Elvis Presley to some of Australia's teen idols such as Johnny O'Keefe, Col Joye and Lonnie Lee. One of these performers, Lonnie Lee will bring his band The Leemen to the Maitland City Bowling Club on Good Friday and the Barrington Tops Country Festival on Saturday.
During Lee's period of chart success from 1959 to 1970, he had eight national number one records, with five of them reaching gold status.
He was seen on every major TV show and performed with the biggest in the world at the time including Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, Fabian and The Everly Brothers. From 1966 to 1984 he was mostly living overseas in England and other parts of Europe, and then nearly 15 years in America.
His early career has been captured by the PowerHouse Museum both in its 'Real Wild Child' exhibition that toured Australia, and the subsequent CD Rom which has been distributed to high schools and libraries. Check out www.lonnielee.com
